Guest Lecture on Human Resource Management by Satish Shet ,28 May 2016

Human Resource Management(HRM) in today’s context is defined as process of managing the people in organizations either in a structured or thorough manner. This covers the fields of hiring people, retention of employees, pay and perks setting and management, performance appraisal management, change management and taking care of exits from the company to round off the scheduled activities.

HRM function in contemporary organizations is concerned with the notions of employee enabling, employee development and focuses on making good employment relationship between the management and employees.

In today’s technology oriented world, some MNC’s (Multinationals) call HRM managers are as people Managers, people enablers and the HRM practice as people management and development.

KLETU SMSR Guest Lecture Series

Production department is a sector in company responsible for converting inputs into outputs through the stages of production processes. The Production Manager is responsible for making sure that raw materials are provided timely and made into finished goods efficiently.

Quality department takes care of all quality issues related to products and services.

Marketing department promotes business and drives sales for products or services. It provides the required research to identify target customers and other audiences.

Finance department is a part of an organization that manages money. The business functions of a finance department typically include planning, organizing, auditing, accounting for and controlling its company's finances, budgeting and forecasting. The finance department prepares and produces the company's financial statements.

Consider a scenario wherein there is vacancy for a post of Design Engineer, the situation is that there are only 12 companies around the world and only five are in India. These companies in India are located in different states wherein the design engineer post is filled with high level skilled employee who has no intention to quit the job.

The task of hiring Design Engineer for this post in this scenario is really challenging for HRM,the possible approaches it can take is,
  • Consult job agencies located in that area.
  • Build employee, employer network in social media platform like Linkedn, Naukri etc.
  • Contact international job agencies if employees can’t be hired from India. The HRM needs to be cautious while writing Job duties, responsibilities for the required post.
  • Taking references from already contacted companies and follow them.

Besides this HRM should follow good telephone etiquettes whenever he calls up to the job seekers and the main things to be told on Phone call included,
  • Caller name, designation
  • Company name
  • Company Establishment year
  • Job requirement
  • Products/services
  • Number of employees /location

The HR Manager needs to be polite while handling the call and look to it listener doesn’t get distracted and loose the trust.

The guest also said us the importance of employer branding and compensation benefits to employees. The whole session was interactive and helped us to know about practical experiences of HR Manager and benefited those who wished to opt HR Specialization in their upcoming semesters.

My journey of MBA - a Roller Coaster Ride of an introvert girl by Diana,Semester 4

My parents always wanted me to study in Hubballi and I was confident that this was my spot; this was where I had to start my academic journey. Unlike many of the professionals, my passion was to become a chartered accountant. Unfortunately I couldn’t give my best in this field and realized this was not what I wanted in life. One fine day after my under graduation while I was sitting at my chair and thinking what do I do further although under lot pressure those 3 letters came to my mind – MBA!. I started searching for the next step to get into this place and it was PGCET entrance exam. I gave the exam and while I was awaiting my results I kept on searching on various colleges in Hubballi who could give me the best MBA program and had three colleges in my mind. Finally the results came and I was called for counseling, as my ranking was too far and my counseling was on third day when almost all good colleges’ seats were minimal. I applied for the three colleges and was waiting for my turn, there was massive pressure going on in my head as to what if the seats of the college I want would be grabbed by someone else, me and my mom kept praying. There were only three two seats left for the college I wanted the most, but many students were before my turn. Finally it was my turn and guess what I got the last seat of the college I dreamt. And that college was BVB SMSR!
KLETU SMSR Hubballi

I was all so happy and excited about my journey in SMSR, got my admissions done. But there was this one big fear running in my mind that being an introvert will I be able to survive in this place but still dint leave hopes I was confident enough. It was the day 1 with an interactive and awesome start with the induction and out bond, wherein I got to learn about the college and the faculty members-each faculty was unique and friendly, the expectations of college from me and got to interact with my classmates and seniors. The syllabus and the grading system were explained to us. At that point of time I never realized its importance. Slowly the classes began. After a week I started feeling hectic - the presentations, assignments, projects and the class participation. What troubled me the most was going on the stage every day; I never was comfortable with this thing. There was one friend of mine who used to do all my assignments and presentations, which made me completely dependent on him. One fine day he told me, now I’m not going to do any of your work it’s you who has to do it, otherwise when you’re going to learn. That was the best thing my friend did at that point of time.  I used to come home and cry at my mom’s shoulder that I want to quit but she kept on saying, no I have confidence in you that you can do it. After some days I somehow got used to this place. Although there were marks for class participation I never used to talk, I had good communication skills and capability to lead, I never took advantage of it because I was a coward girl who feared what people would think about me and never took initiation and that’s what my competitors wanted. There would general assembly every Wednesday, I enjoyed every bit of it but not if I was asked to go on stage. That’s because I had a stage fear. First semester came to an end and I realized that I have achieved nothing but the average marks of merely writing in the exams which was not making any justice to my MBA program.
It was in the second semester I realized that I have to do justice for my MBA and that was the turning point for me of my MBA journey. I made myself ready for this ride. It was in this semester we had Nostalgia 2K15, I was in the media committee I was just a non active member. Initially it was very difficult for me as I was hesitant in taking initiation and my competitors grabbed my opportunities. I would be so disheartened and would fall low on my confidence, but it wasn’t their fault too it’s a race and they were playing their moves. At this point of time I realized, people can’t go ahead of you unless you allow them. The next big thing – placement, there was this first pool campus drive of our batch. I just had one thing in my mind that it’s my first interview of my life and I have to get through. And after few days I received an offer letter. This thing increased my confidence. The second semester result were out and my performance was bit more than average but still I was the part of the bunch of people with same grades bracket which I never liked, I wanted to come out of the group. Even though my results was not as much as I had expected but I found one sign of satisfaction that I saw my personality improving I was turning into an extrovert. I motivated myself furthermore that I can do it and can give a tough competition to others. I started working on my goal. We had summer internship after second semester. I got into a service sector – The Gateway Hotel Lakeside Hubballi. It started quiet well as I had a very supportive external and internal guide. Again I was the same girl there, like I would be in the college. All shy and low on confidence. My external guide would put me in all new situations everyday and it went on for two months. I would make mistakes everyday and be upset on myself. But my external guide always motivated me saying one thing, which I follow even now ‘take failures as learning and not as failure’, after two months I came out a confident girl from there. I had learnt lot for life ahead. It was because I had a good external guide.
Now, it was the third semester- third hurdle of the ride, where I badly wanted to prove myself. I got that confidence in me. I started to participate in the class actively, started making good presentations and performing better in every task that I took up. At this point I learnt a new thing – taking new tasks which are out of my comfort zone, will give me new experiences and learning. And as usual end of third semester the results were out and yes I had did it – I was in the top three, third place! But still people saw the cumulative grade which was obviously less because of previous two semester grades and judged me on same to put my confidence down, but that dint affect me at all. For this, I leant new thing in life - people will criticize you on your success to put you down, but the best answer would be to stand firm and work harder to prove myself better. I was so happy and contented that I made it out of the average zone for first time and I’m much beyond it. Now my competitors were shaken up and that was the best feeling ever.
Last hurdle of my ride was the fourth semester. I was much determined and confident, this time my goal was go beyond my previous achievement. I merely dint fear anything that came through my way. In this semester there was this fest again- Nostalgia 2k16. I was so uncertain about the committee I wanted to go into and dint wanted to make mistake as previous year. As always I fell in the trap of peer pressure and got into the invitation committee. Later I realized that I wouldn’t be satisfied if I would be there in the job I am not happy. Instead I wanted to be in the event committee where I could put in my creativity and talent in the events. Soon I not only got myself shifted to the events committee but also became the student events coordinator. Now this was a biggest opportunity for me to complete one missing ingredient in me that was leadership. When I started as a leader I had no experience in this committee as I was in the media committee previous year and so I had to begin from the scratch. I had to handle around 46 students under me and I was not sure of how I would be able to do it. I’m so thankful to my faculty event coordinators who believed in me that I could take up this responsibility and constantly supported me at every step. Students were little hard to handle at first, I was in a state wherein if I were strict I would be bad leader for students and if I were lenient I would be bad leader for faculty coordinators. I had to balance it out. Finally got support from all the students of event committee, it was a team that was working hard together and yes we could see the outcome the events were successful. After this fest there was massive turn round in my personality, I was not me anymore. I attained the leadership quality in me. Now that the results were out and I was in the second place, crossed my own record. I made my parents proud. And I answered all the critics, by converting the criticisms into my victory. But still, hadn’t been started from first semester I would have won either of the medals. I had the capability of achieving it.
What if I dint get the medal, I have achieved lot more than medal. I have a job in my hand. Moreover I’m a transformed me – a huge transformation, with all up and downs. Thanks to BVB SMSR I can face the world bold and strong. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of HOD Sir and all the faculties, who played multiple roles as a teacher, friend, guide, and motivator. And the nonteaching staff, for their cooperation. We were like a family and these two years flew away so fast. And the roller coaster ride comes to an end, what I’m left with in the end is a clear sense of satisfaction and happiness. I shall miss this place and yes I have made justice to my MBA program!

Industrial visit to SPICER INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED - Nayana nanu,4th semester

On 5th march 2016 the quality management students of 4th semester had their next journey towards The Spicer India Private Limited, Jodalli, Dharwad.
SMSR - Spicer India Private Limited, Jodalli, Dharwad

Spicer India Private Limited is a leading supplier of Axles, Driveshaft’s and Drivertrain products as well as genuine service parts. Spicer India Private Limited is a joint venture between Dana Holding Corporation, USA, a world leader in Axles, Driveshaft’s, Structural Sealing and Thermal Management products and ANAND, India.

The industrial visit to Spicer IndiaPrivate Limited helped to know the importance of quality in any manufacturing industry. First we went to the bird view area were we can see the whole manufacturing process of Spicer India and that lead us into many questions as to how the day to day manufacturing process takes place in Spicer India. Later was the series of lectures by the inmates of Spicer India about some of the quality management aspects like Kaizen concepts, Taguchi methods, Kanban etc. which helped us to get the answers for our questions about the manufacturing processin Spicer India Private Limited. Kaizen is the most applied concept for their continual improvement in their day to day process. Some of the HR concepts and practises were also discussed in the series which made us to know how well the inmates of Spicer India are treated.

The event was conducted by Chetan Business School Hubli called Budget Gyaan related to Union Budget 2016-17.It was a state level competition for MBA students ,it involved team of two members. One member had to speak in favor of the union budget and other has to speak against the union budget. But for our surprise there was also a quiz consisting of questions on Union budget and few of the questions were on constitution related to union budget.
Budget Gyaan - prize winners
The debate session began as soon as the quiz ended ,the group members then started to share their opinions regarding current budget aspects .In the first session only 12 participants were selected for final round, and three among them were from our college. There was a little twist in the final round wherein all the participants who spoke in favor of union budget in the beginning had to revert their topic and speak on possible ill effects about the released budget. The topic for the final round was "Whether this year union budget will effect on make in India or not" and after every 5 min the judges started to alter the topic and raised questions.
After the end of final debate of all team participants, there was a panel discussion regarding the union budget. Our college bagged the winner and runner up prizes. The winner was Mr. Sanjeev, 4th semester, Mr. Mukundhan,2nd semester was the runner-up and Miss. Bhargavi ,2nd semester got 3rd prize in quiz.

Experience worth noting – it was a very good experience for us , we learned more by other participants knowledge sharing and  also the auditions helped us to know more and more about the union budget. We came to know about the economic survey and how the pre talks happen before the union budget is announced.

Would this budget change anything at all? Part I: by Jayant Alagawadi

Recently the acclaimed finance minister of our country announced the annual budget for the year 2016/17 in the lower house. Many of us have wondered what does this mean to the common man and how should one interpret a budget of such mammoth proportions. On the outset this budget seems to be a massive change in plans for the present Modi Government, but when we dig deep into the realities one may argue that nothing much has improved since last year and the probability of any at all in the future also seems bleak.

To break it down let’s borrow a little (only graphs and charts) from an article published in The Hindu and authored by SAMARTH BANSAL (the graphs and charts used from the article are purely for educational purposes and the author of this article doesn’t intend to gain any commercial benefit from the same).

First lets have a look at the proposed Government spending for the upcoming year and allocation of the same across various sectors/ministries.

Let’s look at some of the most concerning aspect of this allocation and distribution:

à We don’t find a pie that is dedicated to Higher education explicitly, but according to the data the amount to be spent on the same in the upcoming year is around Rs. 28,756 crore. Which is a mere 13% increase from last year.

When we look at the above graph we get a sense of how much other BRICS nation are spending for education compared to us! A mere 3.5 to 4% of our GDP is being spent on higher education, which is even lower than that of Russia. This is quite alarming considering Make in India, Skill development and Digital India being the flagship projects of our PM.

à Women and child development ministry gets just 0.88% of the entire budget. Now why this is alarming shouldn’t be a question of compulsion but should be of one’s own choice. According to the supreme court of India every Indian city and town should house at least one “Nirbhaya center”. In the mid 2014 the WCD ministry had proposed to open 660 of these centers as a pilot project. When one glances through the proposal submitted by the WDC ministry to the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) it comes to light that these centers plan to hire retired police officers and lawyers to aid the victims. The centers would be run on rented premises and also provide shelter to the victims if needed. I don’t see a “Nirbhaya Center” in my city yet, or in my state. It’s been two years since the proposal has been doing the rounds of various ministries. Recently I read an article about the status of these centers (promised by Ms. Meneka Gandhi to be functional by August 2015) http://theladiesfinger.com/investigation-where-are-the-one-stop-centers-for-rape-victims-under-the-nirbhaya-fund/ and looking at the status of these centers anyone would feel that the WCD ministry could make use of some more funding.

àFew more areas of concern, according to the current allocations, seem to be with “New and Renewable Energy Ministry” with only 0.25%, “Science and Technology Ministry” with only 0.52%, “Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry” with only 0.37% and “Environment, Forests and Climate change” with only 0.11% allocation of the entire budget. We all know the importance of these ministries and why all of these could do away with more funding than what is allocated to them.

àLets talk a little about the subsidies for a moment. This whole budget is promoted as a poor man’s budget and pro-farmers. So subsidies for farm related products and equipment matter a lot.

From the above graph, one can make out that majority of our subsidy is spent on food and public distribution system of the same. For a budget to gain the title of being pro-farmers, the fertilizer subsidy is the one we should take a look at. Since 2009 there has been a gradual decline in the fertilizer subsidy allocation and a slight evening out from 2012 (from the graph). This year the government has allocated Rs. 70,000 crore, which is again less than previous year, towards fertilizer subsidy. Now this might seem a huge allocation, but lets have a look at the ground reality.  Satish Chander, director-general of the Fertilizer Association of India has told The Indian Express that Rs. 70,000 crore would be sufficient for the fiscal year per se, but it cannot take care of the built up arrears from the previous years. Lets have a guess; we will be starting the new fiscal year with outstanding subsidy dues of Rs. 45,000 crore payable to the industry (source:  Harish Damodharan, The Indian Express). This means we are left with only Rs. 25,000 as effective allocation towards fertilizer subsidy. There is also the issue of purchases related to urea, which has not been addressed by Mr. Jaitley. So calling this budget a pro-farmer’s budget seems like an after thought already.

Research Initiative Workshop Phase III: organised by SMSR

From 23rd to 25th of this February, School of Management Studies and Research organized a three-day workshop on philosophy of research (both qualitative and quantitative). This workshop is a part of continuous process to orient the faculty members and students of SMSR towards research in their chosen areas. Phase II and I have already been conducted in the previous academic years, and phase III was an extension of the same. The resource persons for all three phases were from Tata Institute of Social Studies, Mumbai.

Phase III saw Dr. Samapthi Guha and Dr. Archana Singh from TISS, take the participants through various philosophies of research. The emphasis was given on directing one’s research through the research question and ontology and not by some predetermined methodology.

Each day was divided into various sessions, but on the outset it was laid out into a session of theory and one for activities. Qualitative and quantitative research philosophies were both touched upon and the participants were asked to work on the same during the sessions kept aside for activities. Literature review was also an area, which was emphasized by the resource persons a lot. Various techniques on reviewing and surveying the literature were discussed during the sessions.

The Phase III saw participation from different institutes like KLE’s IMSR and KLE Belgaum too. In total around 16 participants spent three days in SMSR honing their research skills. In the end it was a highly fruitful and productive workshop for aspiring researchers like us.

Would like to appreciate the trouble taken by Ms. Jayanti Belur in organizing the whole workshop and running the show for three days. Would also like to thank our H.O.D Dr. S.V. Patil for taking away our regular responsibilities for those three days so we could dedicate ourselves completely for the workshop itself.

General Assembly Concept by Swathi Maharajanavar,Semester 2

General assembly is conducted every Wednesday at 10.30am-12.30pm,as the name suggests it is a general assembly of all faculties, students of both seniors and juniors of present batches. It is a brainstorming session consisting of general mind triggering games, management aspects quizzes, puzzles, theme based team events, debate hours, group discussions and much more.

General assembly-SMSR
Before the general assembly begins the students are clubbed into various river name based teams i.e., Brahmaputra, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Narmada and Yamuna. These team names indicate the significance of important rivers of our nation. Each team is allocated with faculty members. Every Wednesday one single team will organize the general assembly session.

As a fresher MBA graduates general assembly has helped us to know the meaning of team, team work and team building concepts. It has helped us to know how to manage and prepare ourselves during strategic games and discussion hours. While other teams play and perform we observe them, this helped us to know how to plan tactics to win the games, imbibe the seen ideas while organizing our team, think and analyze critically. It has also us given practical experience of event management in specified time.

It has improved our body language, mind consciousness, proper attire, right attitude and organization behavior. Finally after all the teams are done with organizing respective general assembly session, the high scored team ,best organized team, best anchoring is felicitated with mementos.

It is a great session helping the students to remove the gap of communication between the seniors and faculties and making students aware of their inner consciousness.

Last but not the least the motivation factor by our faculties and seniors boosted our energies, showcased the hidden talents and made a difference out of it.

BIG DAY @ BIG BAZAAR :Sangamesh R Vastrad & Joyson Bandi ,IV semester

First we would like to thank BVB- SMSR for giving this opportunity to be a part of this event (BIG DAY).

The concept of BIG DAY came into existence by Big Bazaar on four particular days of the year. They have started this with the intention to collect huge revenues by providing heavy sale offers.

Big Day - Big bazzar
Well the BIG DAY event which was from 22nd jan to 26th jan 2016. Since these days have a significance of their own for the retail market, huge footfall is expected in the big-day sales.

We have always been tempted to visit BIG DAY sales as volunteers.  But it was a great experience for us to be a part of BIG DAY, however, as far as our experience will go as retailers.

It  helped us to learn practically which was more easier to understand then theoretically, In real life this kind of practical learning will help the students and we can easily understand the classroom learning by doing practical things. In retail industry to reach targets in a particular time is a challenging task which we could achieve it in a given period, and it was possible only because of the learning that we got in our classrooms and which we implemented on the field. Through this event we also analysed different kinds of human behaviours and Etc

Being marketing students it helped us to acquire the on field knowledge about the retail industry and also made us to build our work network with the employees as well as the customers.

National Conference 28-30th January 2016 at TISS,Mumbai by Dr.S.V.Patil

I was in Mumbai during 28-30 Jan at TISS to participate in National Conference and attend meeting of South Asian Network of Impact Masters (SANIM). It was a highly satisfying experience for the following reasons:
National Conference TISS. Mumbai

Time Management: Prof Majumdar is known for it and maintained that image. All the faculty members of Center for Social Entrepreneurship attended complete three days sessions.

Hospitality: TISS has given us an immense opportunity by extending the invitation for the conference and facilities were excellent.

Program schedule (9.00 am to 7.30 pm): Time allotted for expert speaker and paper presenters was optimal. There was a lot of scope for Q n A to clarify doubts and suggestions.

Expert Lectures: core to the conference theme and speakers were able to bring out there hardcore research experience. I learnt quite a few new and contemporary approaches in research.

Paper Presentations: Unlike in other conferences, papers were carefully scrutinized and called for presentation. Only 3 papers per session (90min), on an average 60 minutes to each presenter, scholar can explain his work better and at the end the whole process was justified with the investment of energy, time, and money.  In many of other occasions, after having invested resources and travelled 100’s of kms, scholars were given 5-7 minutes (including Q n A).

Meeting of SANIM (4th meeting) was also organized to discuss, as name indicates, to strengthen MBA program through the impact on society, economy and environment.  Many new South Asian members from Sri-lanka, Maldives,  and Nepal also attended the meeting.  The agenda was to revise curriculum by incorporating impact component in each course. Institute of Professional Education and Research (IPER) Bhopal did the initial work and it was a good beginning. Detailed discussions were held on the same. Finally it was decided to have special conference on the same and IPER will host it.

Mr Saikat of Arvindo Ashram, Pondicherry shared his experience of the newly designed course on “Self Governing Leadership” and delivered at TISS. Prof. Joy Mitra of Essex University, Colchester, UK urged  other organizations  who have promised similar projects to complete them at the earliest. It was decided to host a web site SANIM.ORG immediately. Prof. Mitra appreciated our Student, Institute and Industry Track (SIIT) and asked to present about the same in the next meeting. Others also appreciated and complemented the track as very unique one, at least in India.
My colleagues from Karnataka Dr H. N. Shivaprasad (JSS, Dharwad), Dr M.V. Alagawadi (Central University, Gulbarga), Dr Chennaveer (Central University, Gulbarga) were also part of the conference. Their presence also gave scope for regional cooperation among B-schools of North Karnataka.

It was an opportunity to understand ourselves better and learn more and more humility.
