Guest Lecture on Human Resource Management by Satish Shet ,28 May 2016

Human Resource Management(HRM) in today’s context is defined as process of managing the people in organizations either in a structured or thorough manner. This covers the fields of hiring people, retention of employees, pay and perks setting and management, performance appraisal management, change management and taking care of exits from the company to round off the scheduled activities.

HRM function in contemporary organizations is concerned with the notions of employee enabling, employee development and focuses on making good employment relationship between the management and employees.

In today’s technology oriented world, some MNC’s (Multinationals) call HRM managers are as people Managers, people enablers and the HRM practice as people management and development.

Consider example of Manufacturing Company XYZ,

Production department is a sector in company responsible for converting inputs into outputs through the stages of production processes. The Production Manager is responsible for making sure that raw materials are provided timely and made into finished goods efficiently.

Quality department takes care of all quality issues related to products and services.

Marketing department promotes business and drives sales for products or services. It provides the required research to identify target customers and other audiences.

Finance department is a part of an organization that manages money. The business functions of a finance department typically include planning, organizing, auditing, accounting for and controlling its company's finances,budgeting and forecasting. The finance department prepares and produces the company's financial statements.

Consider a scenario wherein there is vacancy for a post of Design Engineer, the situation is that there are only 12 companies around the world and only five are in India. These companies in India are located in different states wherein the design engineer post is filled with high level skilled employee who has no intention to quit the job.

The task of hiring Design Engineer for this post in this scenario is really challenging for HRM,the possible approaches it can take is,
  • Consult job agencies located in that area.
  • Build employee, employer network in social media platform like Linkedn, Naukri etc.
  • Contact international job agencies if employees can’t be hired from India.The HRM needs to be cautious while writing Job duties, responsibilities for the required post.  
  • Taking references from already contacted companies and follow them.

Besides this HRM should follow good telephone etiquettes whenever he calls up to the job seekers and the main things to be told on Phone call included,
  • Caller name, designation
  • Company name
  • Company Establishment year 
  • Job requirement 
  • Products/services 
  • Number of employees /location 

The HR Manager needs to be polite while handling the call and look to it listener doesn’t get distracted and loose the trust.

The guest also said us the importance of employer branding and compensation benefits to employees. The whole session was interactive and helped us to know about practical experiences of HR Manager and benefited those who wished to opt HR Specialization in their upcoming semesters.
