INDUCTION PROGRAMME FOR THE BATCH 2015-2017 by Meghana Shellikeri, IIIrd Semester

The program was kick started with a famous quote"Coming together is beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success....."   The two eminent personalities from Indian Air Force - Mr. C S Havaldar, retired Air Commando and Mr. Vasant Wai, retired Junior Warrant Officer were invited as Chief guests for the day. Both the personalities shared some memorable incidents from their long successful career. According to them, a major quality every student should develop during his/her MBA course is “adaptability”. They also elucidated the importance of communication skills for management students.

Management is all about communicating with others. Mr. C S Havaldar also brought out similarities between military and management. Addresses by both the personalities were knowledgeable and enlightening for the first year students.

Post lunch session was the informal induction program conducted by second year students. Events conducted were 'Buddy system' - where the first year students  paired up with second year students. The latter had to cram and introduce their buddy in an innovative approach which was quite entertaining. The second event was 'Treasure Hunt' which was a team building bustle,where both first and second year students had great fun. The first year students enjoyed while searching for the clue around the campus and they were asked to perform various witty tasks by their seniors to get hold of the clue. The event concluded with avowal of the winners. Later Prof. G S Hiremath gave a gist of the course outline and wished students good luck before he concluded the day.

Power Punch: Contemporary issue of MAHADAYI- KALASA BANDURI project by Amruta Kulkarni, III Sem

The years pass by and we don’t even realize whats going on in our surroundings. The Mahadayi Kalasa Banduri Nala project dispute is going on from past 4 decades and it has taken a very aggressive path from last 76 days. Mr. Vikas Soppin who is supporting leader of farmers in this dispute has enlightened us with the actual status of the project on 1^st Oct, 2015 in KLTU SMSR. Mr. Vikas has completed his BE, MBA and joined in with farmers struggle to resolve this ongoing dispute. Since he is equipped with techno-managerial skills, the situational leader dsicovered this side of his personality and has become quite a force to be recokned with. He explained the project details through a technical lens and summarised the  dispute in four parts namely: the detailed project, benefits, problems & solution to resolve this dispute.

 Karnataka- Goa- Maharastra are the main states involved in this water dispute. The Mahadayi river originates in Karnataka and flows towards Goa, partially in Maharashtra state and finally meets Arabian Sea. It has its upper riparian area in Karnataka & lower riparian area in Madovi which meet the drinking water needs of the town in north-western districts. The Karnataka farmers wanted this Mahadayi river should divert to Malaprabha river in the monsoon season so that the Navildhar dam capacity will increase from 11 TMC to 37.7 TMC, so that 5.28 lack acres of land will receive sufficient water for irrigation. Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot districts & surrounding villages will get benefited from this diversion.  This diversion of Mahadayi to Malaprabha has become the biggest problem from last three decades. To address this water dispute a committee was formed in 1980 under the leadership of Mr. S. R Bommai & a settlment was reached with Goa Government. Goa was supposed to take electricity (Two power plants to be located on Karnataka- Goa border) and Karnataka would be allowed to divert water from Mahadayi river.  But this settlement could not hold due to change in the respective state governments.

In 2002, they come up with another project i. e Kalasa- Banduri nala project. To stop this project the Goa Govt. approached Supreme Court. The Supreme Court didn’t interfere because it was interstate water dispute and in 2010 a tribunal was setup to resolve this dispute but the tribunal is yet to give out its verdict. Mr. Soppin said the tribunal is going to give the verdict in Aug 2016. But according to me, it is a developmental project because;

 

" If project becomes successful then 5.28 lack acres of land get irrigated--> Opportunity to farmers – multi cultivation --> Contribution to GDP --> Economic growth of the Country"

                                                                                                                                    This lecture allowed me to gain an insight into the project and the disputed issue for which farmers are struggling from many days. It was observed that, every year more than 200 TMC ft of water is being drained into Arabian sea from Mahadayi river, & Karnataka Govt. has been trying their best to convince Goa for the diversion of 7.55 TMC ft of water from the river by asuuring them that this diversion will not affect their ecosystem in any way. But the dispute has not been resolved even though little Govt. intervention can solve this issue permanently. Hope to see this dispute reaching its conclusion soon.

Swachh SMSR Abhiyan- An account by Diana and Meghana S, IIIrd Semester

“Ek kadam swacchhta ki ore” Swachh Bharat Abhiyan , the vision of Mahatma Gandhi ji who longed to see a clean India where people would work in harmony, holding each other’s hand to make ‘Bharat’ clean. The prime minister of India Mr.Narendra Modi promoted this vision of Gandhi ji through the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign. 

To join hands with Mr.Modi in creating a cleaner and more beautiful India we in KlETU SMSR have initiated a campaign “Swacch SMSR”, where in cleanliness drive without boundaries starts within the classrooms; spreads to the entire MBA department and then the whole college. On 30^th September 2015 we spent 2 hours  in cleaning our department. Students and the faculty were divided into groups and were assigned the areas to be cleaned such as 1^st yr and 2^nd yr classrooms, library, computer lab, seminar hall, sports room, staff room and office. The department provided cleaning equipments to us. 
All of us dedicated ourselves completely towards cleaning areas assigned to us by dividing the responsibilities amongst our teammates. It was also an excellent team building activity and every member put in equal efforts to make our department clean. After successfully completing the task, the event ended on a good note, the faculty and the Disha committee members appreciated everyone for their efforts, it was a proud moment for all of us. Everyone had snacks and tea provided by the department and dispersed. 

This campaign does not stop here; we will keep on doing the good work, so that the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan mission can be marked as an accomplishment by the 150^th birth anniversary of Bapu. After all, cleaning up the country cannot be the sole responsibility of sweepers. We citizens also have a bigger role to play.
